How do I start listening?
Visit odyssey.voicesofold.com in any modern browser and tap the Play button. Book I is completely free, so you can experience the full reader with word-by-word highlighting and a full cast of voices before deciding to unlock the rest.
How do I unlock all 24 books?
Tap the Unlock button in the reader toolbar. A one-time payment of $6.99 unlocks all 24 books permanently. No subscription, no recurring charges. Your purchase is tied to your device and browser.
What devices does the reader work on?
The reader works in any modern web browser on phone, tablet, or desktop. It runs well on Chrome, Safari, Firefox, and Edge. No app download is required.
How does the text sync with audio?
Each word highlights as it is spoken, so you can follow along visually while listening. The text and audio stay perfectly in sync throughout the narration.
Can I listen offline?
Yes. After your first visit, the site installs a service worker that caches the reader and audio files. You can then listen without an internet connection.
I purchased but Books are still locked. What should I do?
Try refreshing the page. If that does not help, clear your browser cache and reload. If the issue persists, contact support@voicesofold.com with your purchase confirmation email and we will resolve it promptly.
What translation is used?
The reader uses Samuel Butler's 1900 prose translation of the Odyssey, which is in the public domain. Butler's translation is valued for its clear, readable prose that makes Homer accessible to modern readers.
